The SN74HC595DR from Texas Instruments is an 8-bit serial-in/parallel-out shift register with output latches and 3-state outputs. It is one of the most widely used logic ICs for expanding output capabilities of microcontrollers. Using only 3 GPIO pins (data, clock, latch), it can control 8 output lines, and multiple devices can be daisy-chained for virtually unlimited expansion. The device operates from 2V to 6V and is housed in a 16-pin SOIC package for surface-mount applications.

The SN74HC595DR from Texas Instruments is a classic 8-bit shift register with output storage register and 3-state outputs, belonging to the 74HC logic family. It is one of the most popular logic ICs in embedded design, used to expand the number of digital outputs available from a microcontroller. Using just three control signals (SER, SRCLK, RCLK), a single device provides 8 output lines, and multiple devices can be cascaded through the serial output (QH’) pin for unlimited expansion. The separate shift and storage registers allow new data to be shifted in while the current output remains stable, preventing flicker in display applications. The SOIC-16 surface-mount package is suitable for automated PCB assembly.
The SN74HC595DR contains two 8-bit registers operating in tandem. The shift register accepts serial data on the SER input, clocked in on each rising edge of SRCLK. After 8 bits have been shifted in, the RCLK (register clock) rising edge transfers the shift register contents to the storage register, which directly drives the 8 parallel outputs (QA-QH). The SRCLR (shift register clear) input resets the shift register independently of the storage register. The OE (output enable) input, when high, places all outputs in a high-impedance state, while internal register data and the QH’ serial output remain unaffected. The QH’ output provides the 9th and subsequent shift register bits for daisy-chaining additional 595 devices. This dual-register architecture ensures glitch-free output transitions since outputs only update when RCLK is pulsed.
