The SN65HVD230 from Texas Instruments is a 3.3V CAN bus transceiver compatible with the ISO 11898-2 high-speed CAN physical layer standard in an 8-pin SOIC package. Designed specifically for use with 3.3V microcontrollers and DSPs, it eliminates the need for a 5V supply typically required by 5V CAN transceivers like the PCA82C250. The RS (pin 8) provides three operating modes: high-speed mode (RS=GND), slope-control mode (RS=resistor to GND), and low-power standby mode (RS=HIGH). In standby mode, the driver is disabled but the receiver remains active (listen-only), consuming only 370uA. The VREF pin provides a VCC/2 reference voltage for CAN controller threshold comparison. With +/-16kV bus ESD protection, thermal shutdown, and fault-tolerant design, it operates reliably in harsh industrial environments.

The SN65HVD230 operates through four subsystems: (1) CAN Transmitter: A differential driver converts the single-ended TXD input to a CAN bus differential signal (CANH – CANL > 0.9V for dominant, < 0.5V for recessive). The driver output slope is controlled by the RS pin to optimize EMC performance. In high-speed mode (RS=GND), the driver switches as fast as possible. With a resistor to GND, the slew rate is proportional to the current flowing out of RS. (2) CAN Receiver: A differential receiver converts the bus signal to a single-ended RXD output. The receiver operates over a -2V to +7V common-mode range and can withstand +/-25V common-mode transients. Open-circuit fail-safe design ensures recessive output when the bus is floating. (3) Mode Control (RS Pin): RS=GND selects high-speed mode. RS=resistor to GND selects slope-control mode (10kOhm gives ~15V/us, 100kOhm gives ~2V/us). RS=HIGH selects standby mode where the driver is disabled but the receiver continues monitoring the bus. (4) Protection: Thermal shutdown disables the driver above 165C. Cross-wire protection, loss-of-ground, and overvoltage protection ensure robustness. An unpowered node presents high impedance to the bus, not disturbing other nodes.
