The SN65HVD1050 from Texas Instruments is an EMC-optimized high-speed CAN transceiver designed for robust operation in harsh environments. It meets or exceeds ISO 11898-2 specifications with data rates up to 1 Mbps. The device features bus fault protection from -27V to 40V, withstands ISO 7637 voltage transients from -200V to 200V, and includes overtemperature shutdown. A dominant time-out function prevents network communication lockup caused by hardware or software failures. The silent (listen-only) mode disables the driver while keeping the receiver active for diagnostic monitoring.

The SN65HVD1050 converts TTL/CMOS logic levels to differential CAN bus signals. The transmitter drives CANH and CANL with complementary signals for the dominant state (logic 0), while the recessive state (logic 1) leaves both lines biased to VCC/2 via internal resistors. The EMC-optimized output stage controls slew rate and symmetry to minimize electromagnetic emissions while maintaining signal integrity. The dominant time-out circuit monitors TXD: if no rising edge is detected within a timeout period, the driver is disabled to prevent a stuck-dominant fault from blocking the bus. The S pin selects between high-speed mode (S=GND) and silent mode (S=VCC), where the driver is disabled but the receiver remains functional.
