The SN6501DBVR from Texas Instruments is a monolithic oscillator and power driver specifically designed for small form factor isolated power supplies in isolated interface applications. It drives the primary of a low-profile center-tapped transformer from a 3.3 V or 5 V DC supply, and the secondary winding can be configured for any isolated output voltage based on the transformer turns ratio. The device integrates two N-channel power MOSFET switches that alternate in a push-pull configuration, driven by an internal oscillator at approximately 410 kHz. Break-before-make logic ensures that both switches are never on simultaneously, preventing shoot-through current that could damage the device or transformer. The push-pull topology inherently provides low output ripple after rectification, enabling the use of small output capacitors. With primary-side drive capability of 350 mA at 5 V supply, the SN6501 can deliver several watts of isolated power depending on the transformer specification. The compact SOT-23-5 package minimizes board space, making it ideal for space-constrained isolated interface designs.

The SN6501DBVR operates through three functional blocks: (1) The internal oscillator generates a 410 kHz (typical) clock signal that alternately enables the two N-channel power switches. The oscillator is fully internal, requiring no external timing components. The frequency varies from 300 kHz to 620 kHz across process and temperature. (2) The gate drive circuit receives the oscillator output and generates complementary drive signals for the two internal N-channel MOSFETs. A break-before-make delay of approximately 50 ns ensures both switches are off before the alternate switch turns on, preventing cross-conduction. The switches drive the two ends of the center-tapped transformer primary alternately to ground, while the center tap connects to VCC. (3) The transformer converts the primary switching waveform to a secondary voltage determined by the turns ratio. Full-wave rectification using two diodes on the secondary produces a DC output with ripple at twice the switching frequency (820 kHz), which is easily filtered with a small capacitor. The secondary is galvanically isolated from the primary, with the isolation rating determined entirely by the transformer specification.
