The SIM800C from SIMCom is a complete quad-band GSM/GPRS module in an ultra-compact LGA package, designed for machine-to-machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) applications where space and power are at a premium. Measuring only 17.6 x 15.7 x 2.3mm, the SIM800C is one of the smallest GSM modules available, enabling integration into wearable devices, asset trackers, and compact IoT sensors. The module supports all four GSM bands (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) for worldwide coverage, GPRS Class 12 for data connectivity up to 85.6kbps, and circuit-switched voice calls with multiple codec support (FR/HR/EFR/AMR). The module is controlled via standard AT commands over a UART serial interface, compatible with GSM 07.07 and 07.05 standards, making it easy to integrate with any microcontroller. The embedded TCP/UDP protocol stack allows direct internet connectivity without requiring a separate TCP/IP stack on the host MCU. Bluetooth 3.0 support enables short-range connectivity for configuration, firmware updates, or proximity detection. The SIM interface supports both 1.8V and 3V SIM cards. The module operates from 3.4V to 4.4V supply (3.8V typical from a single Li-Ion cell), with a peak transmit current of 2A that must be supplied by a low-ESR power source or dedicated PMIC. The 0.7mA sleep current enables long battery life in periodic reporting applications. The SIM800C is widely used in asset tracking, smart metering, remote monitoring, and security systems.

The SIM800C operates as a complete cellular modem module controlled via AT commands. Key subsystems include: (1) RF Transceiver – the quad-band RF front end supports 850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM bands; the power amplifier delivers 2W at 850/900MHz and 1W at 1800/1900MHz; the module requires an external antenna connected via an RF pad; (2) Baseband Processor – an integrated baseband DSP handles GSM/GPRS protocol stack layers 1-3, voice codec processing, and AT command parsing; the host MCU sends AT commands (e.g., ATD for dial, AT+CMGS for SMS, AT+CIPSTART for TCP connection) via UART; (3) GPRS Data – Class 12 GPRS supports up to 4 timeslots in downlink and 4 in uplink (4+1 or 3+2 configuration); the maximum data rate is 85.6kbps; the embedded TCP/UDP stack handles socket-level operations, allowing the MCU to send/receive data without implementing TCP/IP; (4) Power Management – the module requires a clean 3.4-4.4V supply capable of delivering 2A peak during transmit bursts; internal LDOs regulate the supply for the RF and baseband sections; the module enters sleep mode when DTR is deasserted, reducing current to 0.7mA; (5) Bluetooth 3.0 – an integrated Bluetooth transceiver supports SPP (Serial Port Profile) for data and HFP for audio; the BT interface is also controlled via AT commands.
