The PCA9534APWR from Texas Instruments is an 8-bit I2C and SMBus I/O expander that provides general-purpose remote I/O expansion for microcontroller families via a two-wire serial interface. The device features 8 individually configurable I/O pins that can be set as inputs or outputs through a configuration register. A polarity inversion register allows the input polarity to be reversed without external logic. An open-drain active-low interrupt output (INT) notifies the host controller when any input state changes, eliminating the need for continuous polling. Operating from 2.3V to 5.5V with 5V-tolerant I/O pins, the device is compatible with both 3.3V and 5V systems. The maximum standby current of only 1uA makes it ideal for battery-powered applications. Three hardware address pins (A0-A2) allow up to eight devices to share the same I2C bus, and using both PCA9534 and PCA9534A allows up to 16 devices.

The PCA9534APWR operates as an I2C slave device providing 8 bits of remote GPIO expansion. Key subsystems include: (1) I2C Interface – a standard 2-wire slave interface (SDA, SCL) supporting 400kHz fast mode; device address is set by A0-A2 pins; (2) Configuration Register – 8 bits control the direction of each I/O pin (0=output, 1=input); defaults to all inputs on power-up; (3) Output Register – 8 bits store the output data for pins configured as outputs; outputs are latched with high-current drive for LED driving; (4) Input Register – 8 bits read the current state of all I/O pins; (5) Polarity Inversion Register – 8 bits allow individual polarity inversion of input pins; (6) Interrupt Logic – compares current input state with previous state; any change generates an active-low INT output; (7) Power-On Reset – initializes all registers to default values on power-up.
