The PC817C from Sharp is a single-channel optocoupler in a 4-pin DIP package providing 5000Vrms galvanic isolation. The C suffix grade offers a CTR (Current Transfer Ratio) of 200-400% at IF=5mA, providing high sensitivity for low-drive applications. The 80V collector-emitter voltage rating is higher than many competing optocouplers, giving more headroom for output circuit design. The PC817 is available in four CTR grades (A: 50-150%, B: 100-300%, C: 200-400%, D: 300-600%) allowing designers to optimize gain for specific applications. It is one of the most widely used optocouplers worldwide, particularly in SMPS feedback loops where its high CTR ensures reliable signal coupling even with low LED drive currents.

The PC817C works on the same optical coupling principle as other optocouplers. Forward current through the infrared LED (IF) generates photons that cross the dielectric isolation barrier and illuminate the base region of the output phototransistor. The absorbed photons create base-emitter photocurrent, which the transistor amplifies by its hFE to produce collector current (IC). The CTR of 200-400% means that IC is 2-4 times IF, providing signal gain. This high CTR is achieved by optimizing the phototransistor’s hFE and the optical coupling efficiency. In SMPS feedback applications, the LED is typically driven by a TL431 shunt regulator through a current-setting resistor, and the phototransistor collector current controls the PWM controller’s feedback pin to regulate the output voltage.
