The NE5534AP from Texas Instruments is a single-channel low-noise operational amplifier designed for professional audio applications. First introduced by Signetics in 1979, it set the standard for audio op-amp performance with 3.5nV/root-Hz input noise density, 10MHz gain-bandwidth, and 13V/us slew rate. The low noise makes it ideal for microphone preamplifiers and phono stages where signal levels are very low. The 10MHz GBW ensures flat frequency response well beyond the audio band. Unlike the dual NE5532, the single NE5534A provides an offset null adjustment (pins 1 and 8) and a compensation capacitor pin (pin 5) for stability with capacitive loads. Without an external capacitor, the NE5534A is stable for closed-loop gains of 3 or higher; for unity-gain stability, a 22pF capacitor from pin 5 to pin 8 is required.

The NE5534AP uses a bipolar input stage for low noise and high slew rate. The input stage is a differential pair with active load, followed by a voltage gain stage and a Class-AB output stage. The bipolar input transistors provide lower noise than JFET or CMOS inputs at low source impedances (= 3. For unity-gain operation, an external 22pF capacitor from pin 5 to pin 8 adds a second pole that ensures stability. The offset null pins (1 and 8) allow trimming the input offset voltage to zero using a 10kOhm potentiometer. The 13V/us slew rate is achieved by the Class-AB input stage tail current that can charge and discharge the compensation capacitor rapidly.
