The MCP4921 uses a resistor-string DAC architecture where the 12-bit digital code selects a tap point on a precision resistor ladder to produce the output voltage. The selected voltage is buffered by a rail-to-rail output amplifier that can drive loads as low as 1kΩ. The SPI interface accepts a 16-bit command word: 4 configuration bits (write/ignore, buffered VREF, output gain 1x/2x, shutdown) followed by 12 data bits. The LDAC pin allows synchronous update of the DAC output from the input register. The SHDN bit in the command word can place the device in 0.1µA shutdown mode while preserving the register contents.
