The MAX3232CSE+T from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is a low-power true RS-232 transceiver operating from 3.0V to 5.5V with 2 drivers and 2 receivers. Its proprietary low-dropout transmitter output stage and dual charge pump generate RS-232 compliant voltage levels (±5.5V) from a single 3.0V-5.5V supply, requiring only four 0.1uF external capacitors. The device is pin, package, and functionally compatible with the industry-standard MAX232, enabling easy upgrades from 5V-only designs to 3.3V systems. The CSE package is the narrow SOIC-16, and the +T suffix indicates tape-and-reel packaging.

The MAX3232CSE+T uses a regulated dual charge pump to generate +5.5V and -5.5V rails from the 3.0V-5.5V VCC supply. The doubling charge pump uses C1 and C3 to generate V+, while the inverting charge pump uses C2 and C4 to generate V-. Both pumps operate in discontinuous mode: they are enabled when output drops below 5.5V and disabled when it exceeds 5.5V. The transmitters are inverting level translators that convert CMOS/TTL logic levels to RS-232 compliant levels (±5V minimum into 3kOhm). The receivers convert RS-232 levels to CMOS/TTL outputs with 0.5V hysteresis for noise immunity.
