The LT1764AEQ-1.8#TRPBF from Analog Devices is a 3 A low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator with a fixed 1.8 V output, specifically designed for ultra-low-noise applications. The device delivers only 40 µVrms output noise over the 10 Hz to 100 kHz bandwidth, making it ideal for powering RF power amplifiers, PLLs, VCOs, high-speed data converters, and other noise-sensitive circuits. The LDO architecture achieves a maximum dropout voltage of 1.8 V at the full 3 A load, allowing operation from supplies as low as 3.6 V. An optional external bypass capacitor on the NR/ADJ pin can reduce output noise to below 10 µVrms. The input range extends to 20 V, and no protection diodes are required even with output voltages up to 20 V. The shutdown pin reduces supply current to 0.5 µA, and the DD-Pak (TO-263-5) package provides excellent thermal dissipation for surface-mount assembly.

The LT1764AEQ-1.8 operates as a series-pass linear regulator using a PNP pass transistor in a low-dropout configuration. Unlike NPN-pass LDOs that require the input voltage to exceed the output by at least one VBE plus VCESAT (typically 1.5-2 V), the PNP pass transistor allows dropout as low as the VCESAT of the transistor (1.8 V at 3 A). The error amplifier compares a divided version of the output voltage against a precision internal bandgap reference and drives the PNP pass transistor to maintain regulation. The ultra-low noise is achieved through a carefully designed bandgap reference with a dedicated NR (noise reduction) pin. Connecting an external capacitor from NR to GND creates a low-pass filter that attenuates reference noise, reducing total output noise from 40 µVrms to below 10 µVrms. The high PSRR (>60 dB at 1 kHz) rejects input supply ripple, making the device effective as a post-regulator after switching converters.
