The LM337LMX/NOPB from Texas Instruments is a 100mA adjustable negative voltage regulator, the complementary device to the LM317 positive regulator. The LM337LMX/NOPB from Texas Instruments is a 100mA adjustable negative voltage regulator that complements the LM317 positive regulator. The output voltage is adjustable from -1.2V to -37V using two external resistors. The device features excellent line regulation of 0.01%/V and load regulation of 0.1%, with a quiescent current of only 110uA. Housed in an 8-pin SOIC (LM) surface mount package, it includes comprehensive internal protection against thermal overload, short circuits, and safe area violations. The LM337LMX/NOPB is the SOIC-packaged, lead-free, tape-and-reel version of the classic LM337 negative regulator.

The LM337 is a floating regulator that operates by maintaining a constant -1.25V reference between the output (OUT) and adjustment (ADJ) pins. An internal bandgap reference sets this voltage, and the output voltage is determined by the ratio of two external resistors: VOUT = -1.25V x (1 + R2/R1). The ADJ pin draws a small constant current (approximately 50uA), which produces a minor error term that can be minimized by choosing low resistor values. The internal error amplifier compares the divided output feedback with the reference and adjusts the series pass element to maintain regulation. Current limiting, thermal shutdown, and safe area compensation protect the device under fault conditions.
