The LM317LIDR from Texas Instruments is the 100mA version of the industry-standard LM317 adjustable voltage regulator in an SOIC-8 surface-mount package. The device provides an adjustable output voltage from 1.25V to 37V using only two external resistors. The I suffix indicates the industrial temperature range of -40C to +125C. The D suffix indicates the SOIC-8 package, and R indicates tape and reel packaging. The LM317L is ideal for low-current applications such as op-amp bias supplies, reference voltage generation, and programmable voltage sources. The 0.01%/V typical line regulation ensures a stable output even with varying input voltage. The 80 dB ripple rejection at 120Hz can be improved further by adding a bypass capacitor from the ADJ pin to ground. The internal current limiting and thermal shutdown protect the device from fault conditions. For higher current requirements, the LM317M (500mA) and LM317 (1.5A) are available in compatible circuit configurations.

The LM317LIDR maintains a constant 1.25V reference between the OUTPUT and ADJ pins. The output voltage is set by the ratio of two external resistors: VOUT = 1.25V x (1 + R2/R1) + IADJ x R2, where IADJ is typically 50uA. The error amplifier compares the voltage between OUT and ADJ with the internal 1.25V reference and adjusts the NPN Darlington pass transistor to maintain regulation. The ADJ pin current of 50uA is constant over line and load variations, making the error term IADJ x R2 negligible when R2 is small. To improve ripple rejection, a capacitor (CADJ) can be connected from the ADJ pin to ground, AC-bypassing the resistor divider and preventing ripple from being amplified by the R2/R1 ratio. The internal current limiting circuit monitors the output current and reduces the pass transistor drive when the current exceeds approximately 200mA. The thermal shutdown circuit monitors the junction temperature and shuts down the pass transistor when it exceeds approximately 165C. The minimum load current of 1.5mA (typical) must be drawn to maintain regulation, which is satisfied when R1 is less than 1.25V / 1.5mA = 833 Ohm (typically 120 Ohm is used).
