The LM2596T-5.0 from Texas Instruments is a member of the SIMPLE SWITCHER family, providing all active functions for a step-down (buck) switching regulator in a single monolithic IC. Capable of driving a 3A load with excellent line and load regulation, it features a fixed 5V output with +/-4% tolerance over specified input voltage and load conditions. The device operates at a fixed 150kHz switching frequency, allowing the use of smaller filter components compared to lower-frequency regulators. Requiring only four external components (input capacitor, output capacitor, catch diode, and inductor), it dramatically simplifies switch-mode power supply design. The TTL-compatible shutdown pin reduces quiescent current to 80uA typical for standby operation. Self-protection features include a two-stage current limit with frequency foldback and thermal shutdown. The LM2596T-5.0 is available in a 5-pin TO-220 through-hole package rated for -40 to 125 C junction temperature.

The LM2596T-5.0 operates as a fixed-frequency buck (step-down) switching regulator. Key subsystems include: (1) Internal Oscillator – a 150kHz fixed-frequency oscillator sets the switching frequency; this allows smaller inductor and capacitor values compared to lower-frequency designs; (2) Current-Mode PWM Controller – the output switch is driven by a pulse-width modulator that compares the error amplifier output with the switch current; this provides inherent current limiting and simplified loop compensation; (3) Power Switch – an integrated Darlington NPN power switch with a maximum saturation voltage of 1.5V at 3A; (4) Error Amplifier – compares the feedback voltage with the internal 5V reference and drives the PWM modulator; internal frequency compensation eliminates the need for external compensation components; (5) Shutdown Control – the ON/OFF pin accepts TTL-level signals; when driven high (>1.4V), the device enters a low-power standby mode with 80uA quiescent current; (6) Protection – a two-stage current limit: first stage limits switch current to approximately 4.8A; if the overload persists, a second stage reduces the switching frequency from 150kHz to 50kHz to protect the catch diode and inductor; thermal shutdown disables the device at approximately 155C junction temperature.
