The LM1085ISX-3.3/NOPB is the lead-free variant of the LM1085 3 A low-dropout positive voltage regulator from Texas Instruments. It provides a fixed 3.3 V output with a maximum dropout voltage of 1.5 V at the full 3 A load, making it well-suited for 5 V to 3.3 V conversion in mixed-voltage digital systems. The NOPB suffix indicates that the device uses a Pb-free terminal finish (tin), complying with RoHS requirements for lead-free assembly. The regulator incorporates a zener-trimmed bandgap reference for excellent output voltage accuracy, along with internal current limiting and thermal shutdown circuits for robust fault protection. The TO-263 (D2PAK) package provides excellent thermal dissipation capability in a surface-mount footprint, and the tape-and-reel packaging supports automated SMT assembly processes.

The LM1085ISX-3.3/NOPB operates as a series pass linear regulator with three control loops: (1) The voltage regulation loop compares the output voltage with an internal bandgap reference. For the fixed 3.3 V version, an internal resistor divider sets the output voltage, and the error amplifier drives the PNP pass transistor to maintain regulation. (2) The current limiting circuit monitors the pass transistor current and reduces the gate drive when the current exceeds the safe operating limit, protecting against output overloads and short circuits. (3) The thermal protection circuit monitors the junction temperature and shuts down the pass transistor at approximately 165°C, with automatic recovery when the temperature drops below the hysteresis threshold. The low dropout architecture uses a PNP pass element that can operate in saturation with minimal VCE, enabling regulation with input-output differentials as low as 1.3 V.
