The INA139NA/3K from Texas Instruments is a high-side unipolar current shunt monitor with a current output in a 5-pin SOT-23 package. The NA suffix denotes the SOT-23-5 package, and /3K indicates tape and reel packaging with 3000 units per reel. Unlike voltage-output current sense amplifiers, the INA139 converts the differential sense voltage across the shunt resistor to a proportional output current through an external load resistor (RL). The transconductance of 1000uA/V means that for every 1mV of sense voltage, the output sources 1uA of current. The output voltage is then VOUT = IOUT x RL = Vsense x 1000uA/V x RL, allowing any gain to be set by choosing the appropriate RL value. This current-output architecture provides flexibility for level shifting and remote sensing: the output current can be routed through a long PCB trace to a remote ADC without voltage drop errors. The INA139 operates from 2.7V to 40V common-mode voltage, independent of the supply voltage, allowing the supply to be connected to either side of the shunt resistor. The 60uA quiescent current minimizes the error caused by connecting the supply across the shunt, and the +/-1mV max input offset limits the minimum measurable sense voltage.

The INA139NA/3K uses a current-output architecture based on a precision operational amplifier and a matched internal resistor network. The differential voltage across the shunt resistor (Vsense = VIN+ – VIN-) is amplified and converted to a proportional output current through an internal transconductance stage. The internal 1000uA/V transconductance is set by a laser-trimmed internal resistor. The output current flows through the external load resistor RL connected from the OUT pin to ground, producing a ground-referenced output voltage: VOUT = Vsense x 1000uA/V x RL. For example, with Vsense = 100mV and RL = 10kOhm, VOUT = 100mV x 1000uA/V x 10kOhm = 1.0V, corresponding to a gain of 10 V/V. The gain is entirely determined by the external resistor, allowing any gain from 1 to over 100 to be set. The high 100dB CMRR is achieved through precision laser trimming of the internal resistor divider that attenuates the common-mode voltage before it reaches the differential amplifier. The independent supply and common-mode voltage operation allows the supply pin (V+) to be connected to either side of the shunt resistor, with the 60uA quiescent current adding only a small error to the measurement.
