The FT2232HQ-REEL is a dual-channel USB 2.0 Hi-Speed (480Mbps) to FIFO/MCU bridge from FTDI in LQFP-64. It provides two independent channels, each configurable as UART, FIFO (parallel), Bit-Bang (GPIO), or MCU-style bus interface. Channel A supports 245 FIFO mode (asynchronous parallel FIFO up to 30MB/s) and MCU host bus emulation. Channel B supports the same modes plus MPSSE (Multi-Protocol Synchronous Serial Engine) for SPI, I2C, and JTAG emulation. The MPSSE engine is the key differentiator: it generates SPI clock and data signals at up to 30MHz and I2C at up to 400kHz, all controlled via USB commands from the host PC. This makes the FT2232H the most popular USB-to-JTAG/SPI adapter for FPGA programming, embedded debugging, and hardware hacking. The device includes an internal 3.3V LDO regulator for the USB transceiver; the VCCIO pins can be set to 1.8V, 2.5V, or 3.3V to match the target system voltage level. An optional external EEPROM (93C46 or 93C56) stores USB Vendor ID, Product ID, serial number, and channel configuration, allowing customization without driver changes. The FTDI D2XX drivers provide direct API access for Windows/Linux/macOS. The -REEL suffix specifies tape-and-reel packaging. The device is widely used in JTAG programmers (like the Digilent JTAG-HS), logic analyzers, and custom USB-to-parallel adapters.
