1. Low-Frequency Operation: At DC and mains frequency (50/60Hz), the inductor presents only its DC resistance, allowing power current to flow with minimal voltage drop. The 10mH inductance presents negligible impedance at low frequencies (Z = 2πfL = 3.1Ω at 50Hz).

2. High-Frequency Noise Suppression: At EMI frequencies (150kHz to 30MHz for conducted emissions), the inductor’s impedance increases linearly with frequency. At 1MHz, the impedance is 62.8Ω, and at 10MHz it reaches 628Ω. This high impedance blocks conducted noise from propagating through the power line, forcing it to be dissipated or reflected.

3. EMI Filter Configuration: In a typical SMPS EMI filter, the inductor is combined with X-capacitors (across the line) and Y-capacitors (line to ground) to form a pi (π) or T filter network.
