The AR8031-AL1A from Qualcomm (formerly Atheros) is a single-port 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet PHY transceiver in a 48-pin QFN (6x6mm) package. It supports both RGMII and SGMII MAC interfaces, integrates a 1.25GHz SerDes for fiber connectivity, IEEE 802.3az EEE with SmartEEE, IEEE 1588v2, synchronous Ethernet, and Wake-on-LAN, all from a single 3.3V supply.

The AR8031-AL1A from Qualcomm (originally Atheros, acquired by Qualcomm) is a fourth-generation single-port 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet PHY transceiver in a 48-pin 6x6mm QFN package. The AL1A denotes the commercial temperature grade (0-70C) in QFN-48 package. The device supports both RGMII and SGMII MAC interfaces, providing flexibility for various SoC and MAC controller connections. An integrated 1.25GHz SerDes enables direct connection to fiber-optic transceivers in 1000BASE-X or 100BASE-FX mode, or serves as the SGMII MAC interface. The AR8031 implements Qualcomm’s Green ETHOS power-saving technology, which includes ultra-low power in cable-unplugged mode, automatic optimized power saving based on cable length, and full IEEE 802.3az EEE support. The proprietary SmartEEE feature allows legacy MAC/SoC devices without 802.3az support to function as complete 802.3az systems. IEEE 1588v2 precision time protocol and synchronous Ethernet support make this PHY suitable for telecommunications and industrial applications requiring precise time synchronization. The single 3.3V supply with on-chip regulators simplifies BOM, and integrated MDI termination resistors reduce external component count.

The AR8031-AL1A operates through five subsystems: (1) Physical Layer Transceiver: The analog front end implements 1000BASE-T (4D-PAM5), 100BASE-TX (MLT-3), and 10BASE-Te encoding with integrated adaptive equalizers, echo cancellers, and NEXT cancellers for reliable operation over up to 140m CAT5 cable. Automatic channel swap, MDI/MDIX crossover, and polarity correction ensure robust connectivity. (2) MAC Interface: Supports both RGMII (reduced gigabit media-independent interface) and SGMII (serial gigabit MII) for connection to the MAC layer in the SoC. RGMII supports internal delay on the RX path. (3) SerDes: The 1.25GHz serializer/deserializer connects directly to fiber transceivers for 1000BASE-X or 100BASE-FX mode, or provides the SGMII interface. Fiber and copper combo mode is supported when the MAC interface operates in RGMII mode. (4) EEE/SmartEEE: IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet uses Low Power Idle mode during idle periods to reduce power consumption. SmartEEE allows PHY-side EEE negotiation even when the connected MAC does not support 802.3az, proxying the EEE capability. (5) Time Synchronization: IEEE 1588v2 support includes a packet parser for accurate timestamping and insertion in both one-step and two-step clock modes. Synchronous Ethernet provides a recovered clock output derived from the network line-side data for frequency synchronization.
