The AMS1117-5.0 from Advanced Monolithic Systems is a 1A low-dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulator with a fixed 5.0V output. With a maximum dropout voltage of 1.1V at 1A, it is widely used for generating stable 5V rails from 6V to 15V sources.

The AMS1117-5.0 is a 1A low-dropout linear voltage regulator from Advanced Monolithic Systems in a SOT-223 package. It provides a fixed 5.0V output with a maximum dropout of only 1.1V at full 1A load, allowing operation from inputs as low as 6.1V. Excellent line regulation (0.2% max) and load regulation (0.4% max) ensure stable 5V output. Internal thermal shutdown and current limiting provide fault protection. A minimum 10uF output capacitor is required for stability. Pin-compatible with the LM1117, it is widely used in Arduino clones and custom embedded boards.

The AMS1117-5.0 uses a PNP pass transistor in a common-emitter (low-dropout) configuration. Unlike NPN-pass LDOs with 2-3V dropout, the PNP configuration allows the pass transistor to saturate, reducing dropout to just 1.1V max at 1A. The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage with an internal 1.25V bandgap reference. For the fixed 5.0V version, an internal resistor divider scales the output. Thermal shutdown activates at approximately 150C junction temperature. The output capacitor provides compensation for the feedback loop.
