The ADSP-BF531SBSTZ400 from ADI is a 400MHz 16-bit fixed-point Blackfin embedded processor in LQFP-176 (24x24mm). Dual MAC units deliver 800MMACs peak. 52KB on-chip L1 memory (32KB instruction, 16KB data, 4KB scratchpad). 2 SPORTs (8 stereo I2S), SPI, UART with IrDA, 12 DMA channels. On-chip voltage regulator generates 1.2V core from 3.3V I/O. Pin and code compatible with BF532/BF533. SBST suffix denotes LQFP-176 package, Z suffix denotes lead-free, 400 denotes 400MHz speed grade. Cost-effective entry point into Blackfin DSP family.

The Blackfin processor combines a dual-MAC DSP engine with RISC-like programmability. The core executes up to two 40-bit MAC operations per cycle at 400MHz (800 MMACs). The 4-channel video ALU supports SIMD operations for pixel processing. The L1 memory architecture places critical code and data in low-latency SRAM (0-cycle access), with configurable cache for instruction and data. The on-chip voltage regulator allows dynamic voltage and frequency scaling — reducing core voltage from 1.2V to 0.8V for dramatic power savings at lower frequencies. The external memory controller provides glueless interfaces to SDRAM (up to 133MHz) and asynchronous memory (Flash, SRAM, ROM). The 2 SPORTs are ideal for audio CODEC interfacing with I2S, TDM, and DSP serial modes. The 12 DMA channels support 1D linear and 2D rectangular data transfers, enabling zero-overhead data movement between peripherals and memory.
