The ACS712ELCTR-05B from Allegro MicroSystems is a fully integrated Hall-effect current sensor that measures AC or DC current through a low-resistance copper conductor integrated into the package. The primary current path has only 1.2mOhm resistance, adding negligible voltage drop to the measured circuit. A Hall-effect sensor detects the magnetic field generated by the current and produces an analog output voltage proportional to the current: at zero current the output is VCC/2 (2.5V), and it increases 185mV per ampere of positive current (or decreases for negative current). The 2.1kV RMS galvanic isolation between the primary conductor and the sensor electronics allows safe measurement of high-side currents. The 80kHz bandwidth supports AC current measurement including motor drives and inverters. Also available in +/-20A (100mV/A) and +/-30A (66mV/A) ranges.

The ACS712 uses a Hall-effect transducer positioned adjacent to the primary current conductor. When current flows through the copper conductor, it generates a magnetic field proportional to the current magnitude (Biot-Savart law). The Hall-effect sensor converts this magnetic field into a small voltage, which is amplified and offset to produce the ratiometric output. At zero current, the output sits at VCC/2 (2.5V with 5V supply). Positive current increases the output by 185mV/A, while negative current decreases it. The ratiometric output means the sensitivity scales with VCC, simplifying ADC interfacing. The 80kHz bandwidth is set by an internal filter; an external capacitor on the FILTER pin can reduce bandwidth for lower noise. The 1.2mOhm primary conductor resistance ensures minimal power dissipation even at full-scale current (5A2 x 0.0012 = 0.03W).
