The ACM2012-121-2P-T002 from TDK is a 2-line signal common mode choke filter in a compact 0805 (2012 metric) surface-mount package. The ACM prefix denotes the common mode filter series for high-speed differential signal lines, 2012 indicates the 2.0 x 1.2mm footprint, 121 denotes 120 Ohm common-mode impedance at 100MHz, 2P indicates 2-line (differential pair), T indicates tape packaging, and 002 is the packaging code (2000 pcs/reel). Despite its small size, the wirewound ferrite core construction provides 120 Ohm typical common-mode impedance at 100MHz (90 Ohm minimum), effectively suppressing common-mode noise on high-speed differential interfaces. The differential-mode impedance is kept low to avoid signal degradation. The 370mA rated current and 220mOhm maximum DCR make it suitable for USB 2.0 and similar interfaces. The 50VDC rated voltage and 10MOhm insulation resistance ensure reliable operation in typical digital signal environments. TDK recommends MCZ1210AH900L2TA0G as a replacement for new designs since this part is NRND.

The ACM2012-121-2P-T002 operates through magnetic coupling between two wirewound windings on a shared ferrite core: (1) Common-Mode Rejection: When common-mode noise currents flow in the same direction through both windings, the magnetic fields generated by each winding add together in the ferrite core. This creates a high impedance (120 Ohm at 100MHz) that blocks common-mode noise from propagating along the differential pair, converting the noise energy into heat in the ferrite core. (2) Differential-Mode Pass-Through: When the desired differential signal currents flow in opposite directions through the two windings, their magnetic fields cancel in the core, resulting in very low differential-mode impedance. This allows high-speed differential signals (USB, HDMI, LVDS) to pass through with minimal attenuation and signal integrity degradation. (3) EMI Suppression: Common-mode noise, which is the primary source of radiated EMI from cables and PCB traces, is suppressed at the source. The 120 Ohm impedance at 100MHz provides significant attenuation of common-mode noise in the frequency range where most digital EMI issues occur. (4) High-Frequency Performance: The wirewound construction and ferrite core material are optimized for stable impedance characteristics across a wide frequency range, making the filter effective for various high-speed protocols.
