The ATmega48-20AU from Microchip is a low-power CMOS 8-bit microcontroller based on the AVR enhanced RISC architecture. By executing powerful instructions in a single clock cycle, the device achieves throughputs approaching 1 MIPS per MHz. The ATmega48 provides 4KB of In-System Programmable Flash, 512 bytes of SRAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM. The 8-channel 10-bit ADC and 6 PWM channels support mixed-signal control applications. Communication interfaces include a programmable USART, Master/Slave SPI, and Two-wire Serial Interface (I2C-compatible). The debugWIRE interface enables on-chip debugging using only the RESET pin. The -20AU suffix indicates 20MHz maximum speed grade and TQFP-32 package. The device operates from 1.8V to 5.5V with 6 sleep modes for power optimization.

The ATmega48-20AU operates as a modified Harvard architecture 8-bit RISC microcontroller. (1) AVR Core: The CPU fetches 16-bit instructions from Flash and executes most in a single clock cycle. The 32 general-purpose registers are directly connected to the ALU, enabling single-cycle register-to-register ALU operations. (2) Memory: The Flash supports In-System Programming (ISP) via SPI. (3) ADC: The 10-bit successive approximation ADC converts analog inputs in 13-260us depending on prescaler setting. Auto-trigger mode allows timer or event-triggered conversions without CPU intervention. (4) PWM: The Timer/Counter modules generate up to 6 PWM outputs, including fast PWM with variable frequency and phase-correct PWM for motor control. (5) debugWIRE: The on-chip debug system uses a single-wire bi-directional interface on the RESET pin, providing breakpoints and register access without dedicated debug pins.
