The TPS61070DDCR from Texas Instruments is a 90% efficient synchronous boost converter with 600mA peak switch current in a 6-pin ThinSOT-23 package. The DDC denotes the ThinSOT-23-6 package, R denotes tape and reel (3000 pcs/reel). The device operates from input voltages as low as 0.9V, making it suitable for single-cell alkaline, NiMH, or Li-ion battery applications. The synchronous rectifier eliminates the need for an external Schottky diode, reducing component count and board space. At moderate to high loads, the device operates in fixed 1.2MHz PWM mode for low output ripple. At light loads, the TPS61070 enters power-save mode (PFM) to maintain high efficiency by skipping switching cycles, reducing gate drive and switching losses. The 19uA quiescent current minimizes battery drain during idle periods. During shutdown (EN low), the load is completely disconnected from the battery with only 0.5uA shutdown current. The output voltage is set by an external resistor divider from VOUT to FB, with an internal 0.5V reference. Over-temperature protection shuts down the device at approximately 150C junction temperature.

The TPS61070DDCR operates through four subsystems: (1) Boost Power Stage: An internal N-channel MOSFET switch and a synchronous P-channel MOSFET rectifier form the boost topology. When the switch turns ON, inductor current ramps up storing energy in the magnetic field. When the switch turns OFF, the synchronous rectifier turns ON, transferring stored energy to the output capacitor and load. The 1.2MHz switching frequency enables small external inductor and capacitor values. (2) PWM/PFM Control: At loads above the power-save threshold, fixed-frequency PWM operation provides low output ripple and tight regulation. The error amplifier compares the FB pin voltage with the 0.5V reference and adjusts the switch duty cycle. At light loads, the device enters PFM mode: it performs a burst of switching cycles to raise the output above the regulation point, then enters a low-quiescent-current idle period until the output drops below the threshold again. This significantly improves efficiency at light loads. (3) Synchronous Rectification: The internal P-channel MOSFET replaces an external Schottky diode, reducing forward voltage drop from approximately 0.3V to near-zero (RDS(ON) * I), improving efficiency especially at low output voltages. (4) Load Disconnect: During shutdown (EN pin low), both the switch and synchronous rectifier are off, disconnecting the load from the battery. This prevents battery drain through the inductor and rectifier that would occur with a non-synchronous boost converter.
