The TMC5160A-TA-T is an Analog Devices (Trinamic) integrated stepper motor driver and controller in a 48-pin HTQFP package. The device combines a motion controller (ramp generator, position controller) with power driver MOSFETs (290mohm HS+LS total) for 3A RMS (4.2A peak) coil current at 5.5V to 40V supply. The 256 microstep resolution provides ultra-smooth motion for precision positioning applications. stealthChop2 spread-spectrum PWM chopper eliminates audible motor noise at low and medium speeds, producing virtually silent stepper motor operation. stallGuard2 provides sensorless mechanical load measurement and stall detection by monitoring the motor back-EMF, enabling sensorless homing and reference point detection. coolStep dynamically reduces motor current based on the mechanical load (measured by stallGuard2), saving up to 75% energy in partial-load conditions. The integrated motion controller generates trapezoidal and S-shaped velocity ramps in hardware, offloading the host MCU from real-time step generation. SPI and UART interfaces provide register configuration and motion command access. The -TA suffix indicates HTQFP-48, -T indicates tape-and-reel. Packaged in HTQFP-48 rated for -40C to +125C.

The TMC5160A integrates a motion controller and two full H-bridge drivers with internal N-channel MOSFETs. The motion controller generates trapezoidal velocity profiles (AMAX acceleration, VMAX velocity, DMAX deceleration) in hardware. The position controller maintains the target position using a 32-bit step counter. The microstep controller divides each full step into 256 microsteps using internal sine/cosine lookup tables, generating smooth current waveforms for both coils. stealthChop2 uses voltage-mode PWM with spread-spectrum dithering at low speeds, eliminating the current regulation noise that causes audible motor whine. At higher speeds, the driver transitions to spreadCycle (classic current regulation) for high dynamic performance. stallGuard2 monitors the motor back-EMF during the off-time of each chopper cycle; when the motor is lightly loaded, the back-EMF is low and the current decays slowly, indicating no stall. When the motor stalls, back-EMF drops to zero and the current decay changes, triggering the stall detection threshold. coolStep reduces the run current proportionally to the stallGuard2 load measurement, maintaining just enough torque for the actual load.
