The TLP521-1 from Toshiba is a single-channel optocoupler in a 4-pin DIP package providing 5000Vrms galvanic isolation between input and output. It consists of a gallium arsenide (GaAs) infrared LED optically coupled to a silicon NPN phototransistor. The current transfer ratio (CTR) ranges from 50% to 300% depending on the grade suffix (Y1/Y2/Y3/Y4), allowing designers to select the gain appropriate for their application. The TLP521-1 is one of the most widely used optocouplers for signal isolation in switched-mode power supplies (SMPS) feedback loops, industrial control systems, and medical equipment where safety isolation is mandatory. UL 1577 and VDE 0884 safety approvals are available on qualified grades.

The TLP521-1 converts electrical signals to light and back to electrical signals for galvanic isolation. On the input side, forward current through the GaAs infrared LED (IF) emits photons at approximately 940nm wavelength. These photons cross the optically transparent insulating barrier (typically silicone or polyimide) and strike the base region of the NPN phototransistor on the output side. The absorbed photons generate base current (photocurrent) which is amplified by the transistor’s hFE to produce collector current (IC). The ratio IC/IF is the Current Transfer Ratio (CTR), typically 50-300% depending on LED current, temperature, and device grade. The 5000Vrms isolation is achieved by the dielectric barrier between LED and phototransistor dies, which provides both electrical isolation and optical coupling simultaneously.
