The SST89E516RD-40-C-PIE from Microchip is a FlashFlex 8051-compatible 8-bit MCU running at 40MHz with 72KB dual-block SuperFlash (64KB primary + 8KB secondary for IAP boot). 1KB internal RAM, 32 I/O pins, SPI, enhanced UART, PCA, and WDT. The dual-block architecture enables concurrent operation during in-application programming. 40-pin PDIP for through-hole prototyping and legacy designs.

Uses the standard 8051 instruction set with optional 6-clock mode for 2x throughput. The dual-block SuperFlash allows the 8KB secondary block to serve as a bootloader while the 64KB primary block stores application code. During IAP, the secondary block code can erase and reprogram primary block sectors without halting execution. Memory overlay maps secondary block to interrupt vectors during IAP for seamless interrupt handling.
