The SMBJ15A from Littelfuse is a 600 W unidirectional Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diode designed to protect sensitive electronic circuits from electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical fast transients (EFT), and surge events. With a stand-off voltage of 15 V and a clamping voltage of 24.4 V at the rated peak pulse current, the device is optimized for protecting 15 V power rails and signal lines. The SMB (DO-214AA) surface-mount package provides a compact footprint while maintaining the ability to handle 600 W peak pulse power at the standard 10/1000 us waveform. The unidirectional configuration clamps positive transient voltages while blocking in the reverse direction, making it suitable for DC power rail protection. The device complies with IEC 61000-4-2 (ESD), IEC 61000-4-4 (EFT), and IEC 61000-4-5 (surge) immunity standards, providing comprehensive transient protection in a single component.

The SMBJ15A operates as a clamping device that transitions from high impedance to low impedance when the voltage exceeds the breakdown threshold: (1) Under normal operating conditions, with the supply voltage at or below the 15 V stand-off voltage, the TVS diode presents a very high impedance with leakage current below 1 uA, effectively invisible to the protected circuit. (2) When a transient voltage event causes the voltage to exceed the breakdown voltage (16.7 V to 18.5 V), the PN junction avalanches, conducting current and clamping the voltage to a maximum of 24.4 V at the rated peak pulse current of 24.6 A. (3) The device absorbs the transient energy and dissipates it as heat in the semiconductor junction. After the transient subsides, the TVS diode automatically returns to its high-impedance state. (4) The unidirectional configuration provides protection against positive transients only. In the forward direction, the device conducts like a normal diode at approximately 0.9 V. For bidirectional protection, the SMBJ15CA variant should be used.
