The SM6T6V8A from STMicroelectronics is a unidirectional Transil transient voltage suppression diode designed to protect sensitive electronic circuits from electrostatic discharge (ESD), electrical fast transients (EFT), and surge events. With a stand-off voltage of 5.8 V and a breakdown voltage of 6.8 V, it is optimized for protecting 5 V logic and power rails. The device utilizes Planar technology, which provides low leakage current (0.2 uA typical at 25°C) and high junction temperature capability (up to 150°C), ensuring reliability and long-term stability in high-end equipment and switch-mode power supplies. The SMB (DO-214AA) surface-mount package offers a compact footprint while maintaining the ability to handle 600 W peak pulse power at the standard 10/1000 us waveform, and up to 4 kW under the 8/20 us surge condition.

The SM6T6V8A operates as a clamping device that transitions from a high-impedance state to a low-impedance state when the voltage across it exceeds the breakdown threshold: (1) Under normal operating conditions, with the supply voltage at or below the 5.8 V stand-off voltage, the TVS diode presents a very high impedance with leakage current below 20 uA, effectively invisible to the protected circuit. (2) When a transient voltage event causes the voltage to exceed the breakdown voltage (6.45 V to 7.14 V), the Planar junction avalanches, conducting current and clamping the voltage to a maximum of 10.5 V at the rated peak pulse current of 57 A. (3) The device absorbs the transient energy and dissipates it as heat in the semiconductor junction. After the transient subsides, the TVS diode automatically returns to its high-impedance state. The unidirectional configuration protects against positive transients only; for bidirectional protection, the SM6T6V8CA variant is available.
