The MCP3421A0T-E/CH from Microchip Technology is a single-channel 18-bit delta-sigma ADC in a tiny SOT-23-6 package. The device integrates a precision 2.048V reference (+/-0.05%, 5 ppm/C drift), programmable gain amplifier (1x/2x/4x/8x), and an internal oscillator. Resolution and sample rate are programmable: 18-bit at 3.75 SPS, 16-bit at 15 SPS, 14-bit at 60 SPS, or 12-bit at 240 SPS. The onboard PGA allows direct measurement of small signals like thermocouple outputs and strain gauge bridges without external amplification. Self-calibration of offset and gain is performed automatically on each conversion. The one-shot mode reduces supply current to just 39 uA for battery-powered applications.

The MCP3421A0T-E/CH uses a third-order delta-sigma modulator followed by a digital decimation filter. The modulator oversamples the input at a high frequency (approximately 3.072 MHz internal clock) and converts the analog signal into a 1-bit data stream. The decimation filter reduces the data rate to the selected output rate (3.75 to 240 SPS) while increasing effective resolution. Higher oversampling ratios (lower output rates) provide more resolution: 18 bits at 3.75 SPS requires 2^17 = 131072 oversampling ratio. The PGA before the modulator amplifies small input signals up to 8x, improving the signal-to-noise ratio for low-level inputs. The onboard 2.048V reference sets the full-scale range at +/-2.048V / PGA. Each conversion includes automatic offset and gain calibration, where the modulator measures internal zero and full-scale references and applies digital correction to the output code. The I2C interface provides read access to conversion results and write access to configuration bits (PGA gain, sample rate, conversion mode).
