The MCP3201-CI/P from Microchip Technology is a 12-bit successive approximation ADC with SPI interface, offering 100 ksps sampling rate in a simple 8-pin PDIP package. The device features a single pseudo-differential input channel, +/-1 LSB INL accuracy, and ultra-low 5 nA standby current for battery-powered applications. AEC-Q100 Grade 3 qualified, it is suitable for automotive sensor systems. The 2.7V to 5.5V supply range allows direct interface with 3.3V and 5V logic systems.

The MCP3201-CI/P uses a successive approximation register (SAR) architecture. When CS goes low, the device samples the input voltage on the VIN+ pin using an internal sample-and-hold capacitor. The SAR algorithm performs a binary search: the internal DAC generates a trial voltage, the comparator determines if the input is above or below, and the corresponding bit is set. This repeats for all 12 bits from MSB to LSB, completing the conversion in approximately 12 clock cycles. The result is clocked out on DOUT synchronized to CLK, MSB first.
