The MCP2551-I/SN from Microchip Technology is a high-speed CAN transceiver providing the physical layer interface between a CAN protocol controller and the differential CAN bus. Fully compliant with ISO-11898 including 24V requirements, it supports data rates up to 1 Mbps and can connect up to 112 nodes on a single bus. The device features externally controlled slope for RFI reduction, permanent dominant detection, brown-out protection, and automatic thermal shutdown. An unpowered node will not disturb the bus, ensuring system reliability.

The MCP2551-I/SN converts TTL/CMOS logic levels from a CAN controller to differential signals for the CAN bus. The transmitter drives CANH and CANL with complementary signals: dominant state creates a ~2V differential, while recessive state leaves both lines at ~2.5V. The receiver continuously monitors the bus differential voltage and outputs the detected state to RXD. The RS (slope control) pin allows external adjustment of output slew rate to minimize EMI. Protection circuits include thermal shutdown and current limiting during bus fault conditions.
