The MCP2200-I/SO from Microchip Technology is a USB 2.0 full-speed to UART serial converter that enables USB connectivity in applications with a UART interface. The device integrates USB termination resistors, reducing external component count and simplifying PCB layout. It functions as a USB composite device implementing both CDC (Communication Device Class) for UART data transfer and HID (Human Interface Device) class for GPIO control and EEPROM access. The eight general-purpose I/O pins provide flexible control capability, with four pins supporting alternate functions including USB activity LED outputs (TxLED, RxLED), suspend indication (SSPND), and USB configuration status (USBCFG). The 256-byte integrated user EEPROM stores VID, PID, serial number, and product description strings that can be configured via the Microchip configuration utility. The device supports baud rates from 300 to 1M baud with hardware flow control, making it suitable for a wide range of serial communication applications.

The MCP2200-I/SO operates through three main functional blocks: (1) The USB interface handles all USB 2.0 full-speed protocol requirements including device enumeration, endpoint configuration, and data packet management. The internal SIE (Serial Interface Engine) manages NRZI encoding, CRC generation, and bit stuffing. Integrated 1.5 kOhm pull-up resistors on D+ signal full-speed capability to the host. (2) The UART interface converts between USB data packets and asynchronous serial data. The baud rate generator supports 300 to 1M baud with configurable data format (7/8 data bits, 1/2 stop bits, parity options). Hardware flow control via RTS/CTS signals prevents data overflow. The 128-byte TX and RX buffers with smoothing technology ensure reliable data throughput at any supported baud rate. (3) The GPIO controller manages 8 I/O pins that can be individually configured as input or output. Four pins have alternate USB status functions. The HID interface allows host software to read and write GPIO pins and access the 256-byte user EEPROM without requiring custom USB drivers.
