The MAX3485ESA+ from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is a 3.3 V low-power RS-485/RS-422 transceiver designed for half-duplex communication on balanced transmission lines. It supports data rates up to 10 Mbps and features a 1/4 unit load receiver input impedance that allows up to 128 transceivers on a single bus. The device includes driver and receiver enable pins for independent control. ±15 kV ESD protection on the bus pins provides robustness against electrostatic discharge events. The 1.2 mA quiescent current and 1 nA shutdown current make it suitable for power-sensitive applications. The device is pin-compatible with the industry-standard 75176 transceiver.

The MAX3485ESA+ consists of a differential line driver and a differential line receiver in a single package. The driver takes a single-ended TTL/CMOS input on the DI pin and converts it to a differential output on the A and B bus pins. The driver is enabled by the DE (Driver Enable) pin. The receiver takes a differential input from the A and B bus pins and outputs a single-ended signal on the RO (Receiver Output) pin. The receiver is enabled by the RE (Receiver Enable, active low) pin. In half-duplex mode, DE and RE are typically tied together so the device alternates between transmit and receive modes. The differential signaling provides high noise immunity and allows communication over long cable runs (up to 1200 meters at lower data rates). The 1/4 unit load input impedance (96 kOhm) minimizes bus loading, enabling more devices on the same network.
