The MAX31865AAP+T from Analog Devices is an easy-to-use resistance-to-digital converter optimized for platinum resistance temperature detectors (RTDs). An external precision resistor sets the sensitivity for the specific RTD being used, and a precision delta-sigma ADC converts the ratio of the RTD resistance to the reference resistance into digital form. The device supports PT100 to PT1000 RTDs (100 ohm to 1000 ohm at 0C) and is compatible with 2-wire, 3-wire, and 4-wire sensor connections. With 15-bit ADC resolution, the nominal temperature resolution is 0.03125C, and total accuracy is 0.5C (0.05% of full scale) over all operating conditions. The RTD inputs are protected against overvoltage faults as large as +/-45V. Programmable detection of RTD and cable open and short conditions simplifies system diagnostics. The MAX31865 communicates via an SPI-compatible interface and is available in a 20-pin SSOP package rated for -40 to 125 C operation.

The MAX31865AAP+T operates as a precision resistance-to-digital converter optimized for RTD measurement. Key subsystems include: (1) Excitation Current Source – a precision current source drives the RTD and reference resistor in a ratiometric configuration; the ratio measurement cancels current source errors; (2) Delta-Sigma ADC – a 15-bit delta-sigma converter measures the ratio of RTD voltage to reference voltage, providing a direct resistance ratio output; (3) SPI Interface – a 4-wire SPI interface (SCLK, CS, SDI, SDO) provides read/write access to configuration, fault, and data registers; (4) Fault Detection – programmable thresholds detect open RTD element, RTD shorted to out-of-range voltage, or short across RTD element; fault status is available in a register; (5) Input Protection – ESD and overvoltage clamps protect the RTD input pins against faults up to +/-45V; (6) Reference Resistor – an external precision resistor (typically 0.1% tolerance or better) sets the measurement range and sensitivity.
