The LM393DT is a dual differential comparator from TI/ST in SOIC-8, operating from 2.7V to 36V with open-collector outputs. It is one of the most widely used comparators in the industry, with billions shipped since its introduction. The comparator determines which input is larger: when IN+ > IN-, the output transistor is OFF (open-collector, pulled HIGH by external resistor); when IN+ < IN-, the output transistor is ON (saturated to GND). The open-collector output allows wired-OR connections and level translation to any voltage up to 36V (independent of VCC). The input common-mode range includes ground (0V) and extends to VCC-1.5V. The input offset voltage is typically 1mV (5mV max at 25C). Response time is 1.3us for a 100mV step with 5mV overdrive. The supply current is only 0.4mA per comparator at 5V. The output sink current capability is 6mA at 5V supply. The device is essentially an op-amp optimized for open-loop comparison: no internal compensation capacitor, faster response than using an op-amp as a comparator, and open-collector output for maximum flexibility. The -DT suffix specifies SOIC-8, industrial temperature range (-40C to +105C), tape-and-reel. Common applications include zero-crossing detectors, window comparators, and battery low-voltage detectors.
