The LM317BTG from onsemi is the industry-standard adjustable positive linear voltage regulator capable of supplying 1.5 A over an output voltage range of 1.2 V to 37 V. The output voltage is set using only two external resistors. The device features excellent 0.01%/V line regulation and 0.1% load regulation. Internal protection circuits include thermal shutdown, current limiting, and safe-area compensation for the output transistor. The TO-220 package allows mounting on a heatsink for high-power dissipation applications. The LM317 is one of the most widely used linear regulators in the industry.

The LM317BTG maintains a constant 1.25 V reference between the output (VOUT) and adjustment (ADJ) pins. This reference voltage drives a constant current through the external resistor R1 (typically 240 Ohm) from VOUT to ADJ. The ADJ pin draws a very small quiescent current (50 uA typical), which also flows through the second resistor R2 from ADJ to ground. The output voltage is calculated as VOUT = 1.25V x (1 + R2/R1) + IADJ x R2. Since IADJ is typically 50 uA, its contribution is negligible for most designs. The internal error amplifier compares the 1.25 V reference with the voltage across R1 and adjusts the pass transistor to maintain regulation. The thermal shutdown circuit monitors junction temperature and shuts down the pass transistor above approximately 170C. The current limiting circuit restricts output current to approximately 2.2 A under short-circuit conditions.
