The IRF7470TRPBF is an N-channel enhancement-mode MOSFET from Infineon (formerly International Rectifier) in SO-8, rated at 30V drain-source voltage and 12A drain current with 9mOhm RDS(on) at VGS=10V (13mOhm at VGS=4.5V). The SO-8 package dedicates pins 5-8 (drain) to the large copper tab, providing a thermal resistance of approximately 30C/W on a 1-square-inch copper pour, significantly better than SOT-23 (250C/W). The trench-gate technology creates vertical MOSFET channels that maximize channel width per unit area, achieving the low 9mOhm on-resistance. At 12A load current, conduction loss is I2R = 12^2 x 0.009 = 1.3W, which the SO-8 can handle with a modest heatsink (copper pour). The gate charge is 24nC at 4.5V, requiring a gate driver capable of sourcing/sinking 1A for 24ns switching times at 100kHz PWM. The device is optimized for synchronous rectification in DC-DC buck converters: the low RDS(on) minimizes conduction loss when replacing a Schottky diode as the low-side switch, improving efficiency by 3-5%. The 30V rating makes it suitable for 3.3V, 5V, and 12V power rails. The TRPBF suffix indicates tape-and-reel, lead-free packaging. The device is also used in motor drive half-bridges (two IRF7470 per phase), battery protection circuits, and hot-swap switches.
