The HEF4051BT653 from Nexperia is an 8-channel analog multiplexer/demultiplexer in a 16-pin SOIC package. The 653 suffix denotes tape and reel packaging. Based on the classic 4051 design, it uses eight bidirectional analog switches controlled by a 3-bit binary address (S1-S3) and an active-low enable (E). With a 3V to 15V supply range, it supports both 3.3V and 5V logic systems as well as higher voltage analog signal paths. The 175Ohm typical on-resistance at 5V and 70MHz bandwidth make it suitable for a wide range of analog signal routing applications. The HEF4051B is specified from -40C to +125C for industrial and automotive applications.

The HEF4051BT operates through three subsystems: (1) Analog Switch Array: Eight bidirectional analog switches (Y0-Y7) connect to a common Z terminal. Each switch is implemented as a CMOS transmission gate that can pass analog signals from VDD to VEE (including negative voltages when VEE is tied below ground). When a switch is selected, its on-resistance is typically 175Ohm at 5V. (2) Digital Address Decoder: A 3-to-8 line decoder converts the binary address on S1, S2, S3 into one-of-eight select signals. Only the addressed switch is turned on; all others remain in the high-impedance off-state. The decoder ensures break-before-make operation when using the enable pin. (3) Enable Control: When E is LOW, the addressed switch is selected. When E is HIGH, all switches are forced to the off-state regardless of the address inputs. This allows multiple HEF4051 devices to be cascaded for larger multiplexer arrays (16:1, 32:1) using the enable pin for chip selection.
