The BQ78350DBTR-R1 from Texas Instruments is a CEDV lithium-ion fuel gauge and battery management controller companion to the bq769x0 AFE family in a 30-pin TSSOP package. The R1 suffix denotes the R1 firmware revision (v1.04) with improved shutdown robustness. The DBT denotes 30-pin TSSOP package, R indicates tape and reel. The device provides a complete battery management subsystem: accurate fuel gauging using CEDV (Compensated End-of-Discharge Voltage) algorithm, state-of-health (SoH) monitoring, internal/external cell balancing, and a full range of programmable voltage, current, and temperature protections. Supporting 3 to 15 series Li-Ion/LiFePO4 cells with battery capacity up to 320Ah, it targets light electric vehicles, power tools, and UPS systems. The SMBus 1.1 interface communicates SOC, SOH, and diagnostic data to the host. A 5-segment LED or LCD display shows charge level directly. SHA-1 authentication prevents unauthorized battery packs. Lifetime data logging records cell voltage, current, and temperature history for warranty and diagnostics.

The BQ78350-R1 operates through four subsystems: (1) CEDV Fuel Gauge: Uses coulomb counting integrated with Compensated End-of-Discharge Voltage (CEDV) algorithm. The coulomb counter measures accumulated charge/discharge current through the bq769x0 sense resistor. CEDV improves SOC accuracy by compensating for temperature, discharge rate, and aging effects on the end-of-discharge voltage. Chemistry data loaded into flash allows SOC estimation at power-up from rest voltage. (2) Cell Monitoring and Balancing: Individual cell voltages are measured by the companion bq769x0 AFE and reported to the BQ78350 via I2C. The controller enables internal or external cell balancing to equalize cell voltages during charge and rest periods. (3) Protection Engine: Programmable thresholds for cell overvoltage (COV), cell undervoltage (CUV), overcurrent in charge (OCC), overcurrent in discharge (OCD), short-circuit discharge (SCD), overtemperature (OT), and undertemperature (UT). Hardware-based fast comparators in the bq769x0 provide primary protection, while the BQ78350 adds secondary firmware-based protection with configurable delay times. (4) Communication and Display: SMBus 1.1 slave interface reports all measured and calculated data to the host system. Up to 8 SMBus addresses can be selected via an external resistor. A 5-segment LED or LCD display output provides direct visual SOC indication without host intervention.
