The AT45DB081E-SSHN-T from Microchip Technology is an 8Mbit (1 megabyte) DataFlash serial Flash memory optimized for data logging, firmware storage, and general-purpose non-volatile storage applications. Unlike standard SPI Flash memories, the DataFlash architecture integrates two 256-byte SRAM buffers that enable read-modify-write operations without external RAM, simplifying data logging applications. The device supports standard SPI (up to 85MHz) and Dual-SPI (2-bit) interfaces for high-throughput data transfer, with flexible page erase granularity including individual page (256 bytes), block (2KB), sector (64KB), and full-chip erase options.

The AT45DB081E operates using a unique buffer-based DataFlash architecture. (1) The SPI interface receives commands, addresses, and data through the SI pin (and optionally SO pin in Dual-SPI mode) synchronized to the SCK clock, with CS active-low chip select. (2) The two 256-byte SRAM buffers (Buffer 1 and Buffer 2) serve as intermediate storage for Flash page operations. A Main Memory Page Program via Buffer operation loads data into a buffer and then transfers it to the Flash array in a single command sequence, performing the erase and program cycle automatically. (3) The Flash array is organized as 4096 pages of 256 bytes each, with pages further grouped into blocks (8 pages) and sectors (256 pages). Read operations can access the Flash array directly or through either buffer, with continuous read capability across page boundaries.
