The AM26C32IDR from Texas Instruments is a quadruple differential line receiver designed for RS-422 (TIA/EIA-422-B) communication. The device features four independent differential receivers with +/-200mV input sensitivity, +/-15V common-mode range, and a fail-safe feature that sets the output high when inputs are open or shorted. The 3-state outputs are controlled by active-high enable pins, allowing bus sharing in multi-drop configurations. Designed as a companion to the AM26C31 driver, the pair forms a complete RS-422 communication link. The I suffix denotes industrial temperature range, D denotes SOIC-16, and R indicates tape and reel.

The AM26C32IDR operates as a quadruple differential line receiver for RS-422 communication. (1) Each receiver converts a differential input signal (A-B) to a single-ended TTL/CMOS logic output. When the differential input exceeds +200mV (A > B), the output goes high; when below -200mV (A < B), the output goes low. This +/-200mV threshold ensures reliable detection even with attenuated signals from long cable runs. (2) The +/-15V common-mode range allows the receiver to reject common-mode noise induced on long cables in industrial environments. The high input impedance (12kOhm minimum) allows multiple receivers to share the same bus without excessive loading. (3) The fail-safe feature ensures that the output defaults to a logic high state when the differential inputs are open (disconnected cable) or shorted together (fault condition). This prevents undefined states in the receiving system and enables cable fault detection. The 3-state outputs allow multiple receivers to share a common data bus.
