The ADP125ARHZ-R7 from Analog Devices is a 500mA, low-quiescent-current CMOS linear regulator with an adjustable output voltage range from 0.8V to 5.0V. Designed for portable and battery-powered applications, the device features a low dropout voltage of 130mV at 500mA and a quiescent current of just 45uA at no load. The internal soft-start timer of 350us reduces inrush current during startup. With a PSRR of 60dB at 100kHz, the ADP125 effectively attenuates input supply noise. The device is stable with small 1uF ceramic input and output capacitors, minimizing board space. An enable pin allows logic-controlled shutdown with less than 1uA current consumption. Comprehensive protection features include overcurrent, overtemperature, and short-circuit protection. The ADP125ARHZ-R7 is available in an 8-lead MSOP package with exposed pad and operates over the -40 to 125 C temperature range.

The ADP125ARHZ-R7 uses a PMOS pass transistor architecture for low dropout operation. Key subsystems include: (1) Error Amplifier – compares the divided output voltage with an internal precision 0.8V reference and drives the PMOS gate; (2) Voltage Reference – a low-noise internal bandgap reference provides the stable reference for regulation; (3) PMOS Pass Element – a P-channel MOSFET allows dropout as low as 130mV at 500mA; (4) Soft-Start Timer – an internal 350us timer ramps the output voltage smoothly to reduce inrush current; (5) Protection Circuits – include current limiting, thermal shutdown, and short-circuit protection to prevent damage under overload conditions; (6) Enable Logic – allows the device to be placed in a sub-1uA shutdown mode for power sequencing.
