The ADM3483ARZ from Analog Devices is a low-power differential line transceiver designed for half-duplex RS-485/RS-422 communication on a single 3.3V supply. The slew-rate limited driver outputs minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI) and reduce reflections caused by improperly terminated cables, enabling error-free data transmission at up to 250 kbps. The device features separate driver enable (DE) and receiver enable (RE) controls for flexible bus management. A shutdown mode reduces supply current to just 2 nA, making it ideal for battery-powered applications. The receiver includes a fail-safe feature that outputs a logic high when inputs are unconnected.

The ADM3483ARZ converts between single-ended TTL/CMOS logic levels and differential RS-485/RS-422 bus signals. The driver takes a single-ended input (DI) and generates complementary differential outputs (A and B) with slew-rate limiting to control signal edge rates. The receiver converts the differential bus voltage (A-B) back to a single-ended output (RO). In half-duplex mode, the driver and receiver share the same bus pins (A and B), with DE and RE controls determining whether the device is transmitting or receiving. The slew-rate limiting circuit slows output transitions to reduce high-frequency spectral content, minimizing EMI and allowing reliable operation with improperly terminated cables. The thermal shutdown circuit disables the driver if the junction temperature exceeds approximately 150°C.
