The VLS5045EX-1R5N from TDK is a shielded wirewound power inductor from the VLS-EX-H series designed for automotive power circuits. AEC-Q200 qualified, it features a ferrite resin magnetic shield structure enabling high-density PCB mounting while minimizing EMI. The optimized ferrite core achieves both high current capability (7.4A saturation) and low DC resistance (17 mOhm typical), reducing power losses in DC-DC converter applications.

The VLS5045EX-1R5N stores energy in its magnetic field when current flows through the wound coil around the ferrite core. During switching cycles in DC-DC converters, the inductor alternately stores and releases energy, smoothing current ripple and enabling voltage conversion. The ferrite resin shield contains the magnetic flux within the component, preventing coupling with adjacent circuits. Isat (7.4A) indicates the DC current at which inductance drops by 30%; Irms (5A) represents the current causing a 40C temperature rise.
