The TOP250YN from Power Integrations is the highest-power member of the TOPSwitch-GX family, integrating a 700V power MOSFET with a PWM controller in a single TO-220-7 package. Capable of delivering up to 257W from a 230VAC input, it simplifies offline flyback power supply design by consolidating the controller, MOSFET, and protection circuitry into one component. The 132kHz switching frequency with frequency jitter reduces EMI filter costs, while line-voltage OV/UV detection, external current limit, and remote ON/OFF provide comprehensive system protection.

The TOP250YN operates as a current-mode PWM controller with an integrated 700V N-channel MOSFET. The controller senses the primary current through the MOSFET and compares it with the error amplifier output to set the duty cycle. The feedback loop is typically implemented through an optocoupler from the secondary side. The 132kHz oscillator includes frequency jitter (±4kHz) that spreads the switching harmonics, reducing peak EMI emissions. During startup, an internal high-voltage current source charges the bypass capacitor from the DC bus, eliminating the need for a startup resistor. The line-sense (L) pin monitors input voltage for OV/UV protection, while the external current limit (X) pin allows programming the overload threshold.
