The ST25R3916-AQWT is a high-performance NFC universal device from STMicroelectronics, supporting all four NFC operating modes (reader, writer, card emulation, peer-to-peer) with full EMVCo 3.0 compliance. Its high RF output power (>1.6W) enables direct antenna driving without external amplifiers, while automatic antenna tuning (AAT) compensates for environmental changes. The noise suppression receiver (NSR) and active wave shaping (AWS) simplify regulatory compliance. Packaged in a 32-pin VFQFPN with wettable flanks, it operates from -40C to +105C.

The ST25R3916-AQWT operates as a multi-mode NFC transceiver. In reader mode, the transmitter generates a 13.56MHz carrier via an integrated power amplifier that drives the antenna directly, producing >1.6W differential output. The ASK modulation depth is programmable from 5% to 40% via digital control. The receiver chain includes AM/PM and I/Q demodulators with automatic channel selection or baseband summation, followed by automatic gain control (AGC) and a noise suppression receiver (NSR) that rejects out-of-band interference. Active wave shaping (AWS) controls the transmitter output transition edges to minimize overshoot and undershoot. Automatic antenna tuning (AAT) uses integrated variable capacitors to maintain resonance at 13.56MHz even when the antenna environment changes (e.g., metal proximity). For card emulation mode, the device modulates the external reader field using a load modulation circuit. Low-power card detection uses capacitive and inductive sensors to detect card presence without activating the reader field, consuming minimal current. The 512-byte FIFO buffers data between the host MCU (via SPI or I2C) and the NFC protocol engine.
