The SPX1117M3-L-3-3/TR from MaxLinear (formerly Sipex/Exar) is a low-power positive-voltage regulator designed to satisfy moderate power requirements with a cost-effective, small-footprint solution. The device provides a fixed 3.3V output at up to 800mA guaranteed current (1A peak) with a low dropout voltage of only 1.1V at full load. The +/-1% output voltage accuracy over line, load, and temperature ensures stable supply rails for sensitive digital and analog circuits. The quiescent current flows into the load as output current decreases, naturally improving efficiency at light loads. The SPX1117 is stable with a small 2.2uF ceramic output capacitor. Internal overcurrent and thermal shutdown protections safeguard the device during fault conditions.

The SPX1117M3-L-3-3/TR uses a PNP pass transistor in a low-dropout regulator topology. Unlike standard NPN-pass regulators that require VOUT + VBE + VCE(sat) headroom, the PNP pass transistor requires only VCE(sat) headroom, allowing dropout voltages as low as 1.1V at 800mA. The internal error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage with an internal 1.262V bandgap reference, driving the PNP pass transistor base to maintain regulation. Current limiting protects against output short circuits, and thermal shutdown disables the pass transistor when junction temperature exceeds approximately 160C.
