The MIC5205-3.3YM5 from Microchip is a 150mA low-noise LDO regulator with fixed 3.3V output in a tiny SOT-23-5 package. It features an ultra-low dropout voltage of 165mV at full 150mA load, allowing operation from inputs as low as 3.465V. The device achieves exceptionally low output noise of 30uVrms and high PSRR of 70dB at 1kHz, making it ideal for RF and audio applications. The 680nA shutdown current extends battery life in portable devices. The enable pin provides on/off control, and the device is stable without an output capacitor. Reverse-battery protection and thermal shutdown ensure robustness.

The MIC5205-3.3YM5 uses a P-channel MOSFET pass element in a low-dropout configuration. The P-MOSFET gate is driven by the error amplifier which compares the output voltage (through an internal divider for the fixed version) with an internal bandgap reference. The MOSFET pass element allows very low dropout (165mV) because the gate can be driven to ground potential, fully enhancing the transistor. The low output noise of 30uVrms is achieved by the clean bandgap reference and careful layout. The 70dB PSRR at 1kHz rejects input supply ripple and noise. The enable pin controls a bias circuit that shuts down all internal circuitry, reducing current to 680nA. The NO CAP stability (no output capacitor required) results from the internal compensation network.
